How Master Key System Design Actually Works
A hierarchical key system operates on a pinning principle inside each lock cylinder. Every lock in the system is pinned so that a specific change key — issued to an individual employee — opens only that person's designated door or set of doors. At the same time, a master key (or a series of grand master and sub-master keys) is cut to operating depths that allow it to clear the additional pin stack and open multiple locks across the entire hierarchy. The more levels you need — individual, departmental, building-wide, and grand master — the more precisely each cylinder must be planned and pinned from the start. Errors at the planning stage cascade into real security gaps, which is why the design blueprint matters as much as the physical cutting.
